A beautiful hotel, with great service. One of the best places to set up camp to explore the lake district. The hotel looks lovely, but provides all the best amenities. The suite we stayed in was spacious, with amazing views, great facilities and was very clean and well maintained. Room service was middling, food selection isn't huge and the food was a little disappointing. Breakfast was very good and there was a good selection. The team at the hotel was very friendly and knowledgeable. It's a brisk 30 minute walk from the hotel into Kendal, through one of the most picturesque routes I've ever seen. A great place to visit and stay in.
Overpriced and underwhelmed... From the website pictures, I was expecting somewhere much nicer. It's a Best Western hotel, the rooms look like they have had something of a refresh in the last few years, but the hotel is pretty tired. We were expecting a lot more for £160+ a night. We had the choice of a bath or a balcony, and we chose the bath, expecting a nice big one, but alas it's nothing special at all, just a standard bathroom, and not very special. It's fine as 3 * hotel, but not for that money, and it's certainly not the boutique spa hotel that the website and photos would suggest..... The 'Alexander' pub beside the hotel, is essentially a cafe... There's only a few seats as a 'pub' the rest are tables for food.....

Great hotel located on the edge of the town, ideal for visiting the town. Small car park at the front, £5 for 24 hours. Pub next door provides tea and breakfast. Room was clean and very quiet at night. Staff were lovely.
Very close to town centre ..Parking is 5 quid a night but you can book in advance and receive it back on your payment. Not enough parking spaces. Location great and very good clean fresh rooms. Air conditioning was a real godsend as it was during the heatwave. Bar prices and restaurant prices a little expensive but good food.breakfast approx 10 quid eat as much as you like.

Stunning building and location,. Good size bed and room. Customer services was poor this weekend. From arrival to departure. Staff hung over on the Sunday morning after being in the bar on Saturday night. This showed in the dramatic drop in attentiveness, politeness and general customer services. Bar was closed before 11.30 on a Friday night even for hotel guests. Shane as hot is lovely. Think this could of been bad timing as other reviews seem pretty positive, .this was not our experience.
One night in June. Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful views of the river, from the bar and room. Roomservice food was superb (recommend the cheeseburger). Comfortable bed and clean room. Way better than other local hotels.

14 of us had a well cooked & beautifully presented meal last night. Everyone had something different to eat from a menu that caters for all tastes. We were all served together & the food arrived nice & hot. Well done to the new head chef, we'll be back again soon & we've already chosen what we would like to sample next time. Thank you to all the staff for a lovely evening with excellent service
Simply Amazing food, service & setting. Its obvious to see that a lot of work has been put into this restaurant and it shows. The items of food on the menu were really original and came out hot, perfect sized portions and staff keen to please us. Really great place to go on a date. *Christmas 2017 only - visited a delightful hand-crafted Santa's Grotto in the back yard, which was an amazing use of the space. Can't wait to come again*

We are staying near the lakes for our holiday this year, so after a full day out we found this very small Inn with incredibly friendly people and food which is excellent. When the new owners have replied to previous reviews they have asked "what could we do to make things even better"?....well, I have a great suggestion. Move Castle Inn to Bournemouth, which is where we live, and we will be in daily. The welcome, the friendliness, the quality of the Gourmet Burger and the Fish & Chips was outstanding. Thanks very much 😎
Great pub near the river and castle. Excellent choice of ales which are always good and a comfy interior make this a wise choice for some time out.

Great place, the carvery was lovely and very reasonable in cost. We chose it because it had a playground, and the absolute bonus was that the playground was covered so even though it was sitting with rain the little one was more than happy to pay for ages and we were set up with a take that looked over the playground so we could both have a chill but see the kids play. Also the puddings were lovely and the staff very helpful and nice, wild highly recommend this place to any family's but also anyone who fancies a chilled evening with good reasonably priced food in a friendly pub
Lovely pub with accommodation. We stayed in one of the Lodges. They are good quality and furnished very well. There is self catering facilities but the pub serves excellent food, so I don't know why you would want to self catering. We had the carvery, which gives very generous portions and the biggest Yorkshire puddings I have seen. It was delicious. There is a good play area that is great for small children and older children.

Lovely place. I recommend.
Another fantastic stay at the School House holiday cottage! We stayed during the Kendal Mountain Festival with friends. Beautifully decorated, great facilities and perfect location for exploring Kendal and the rest of the Lakes. Hosts Heidi and Dave provide great resources for waking the region (they've even sorted the walks by difficulty for you)! The 4 of us will definitely stay again!

We have been going to Balcony House.B and B for years . Wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. Màndy and Brian who own the B and B are great . The breakfast is first class and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are beautiful. We look forward to coming again next year .

Very friendly and helpful hosts, very good breakfast, nice location. We had the 'budget' room: tiny bathroom, low pressure shower, mattress not firm enough if you weigh 18 stone.
Lovely place to stay rooms very nice and owners very friendly will definitely stay again

We wanted centrally located hotel accommodation in Kendal and found Highgate Hotel online. We are Hikers and were pleased to find out Highgate Hotel cater for walkers and have the required facilities. Even though its centrally located the hotel has parking, which is also free. The room was spacious and clean, the food was also excellent. All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Kendal, which is a base location to explore the south lakes.
If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
Millcrest House, Shap Rd, Kendal LA9 6NY, UK – 01539 741363
Nice site, just been refurbished lots of fresh turf, tarmac & hardstandings. The facilities look good too. Unfortunately we couldn't stay as all the available pitches were full! Quite disappointed cos the place looks so nice. The site is situated on the North side of Kendal not far from the new rugby club and Morisons supermarket and small retail park. Despite the proximity of the town you feel like your in the middle of the countryside, It's peaceful and quiet with lovely views. Kendal is a great historic market town and well worth a visit on its own and this would be an ideal place to explore from. Add t proximity of the Lakes, the western Dales, Shap and the wildness of the fells around there are all less than 30 minutes drive away. And you'll soon see why this site is so popular.
Site was immaculate. Staff very friendly and helpful. Toilet block was fantastic. Pitches maintained to a high standard. Would definitely return and would recommend to others.
